Tuesday 2/19/13 – Substance Abuse Issues in the Workplace
Participants will receive information about:
- Identifying paraphernalia a. Marijuana b. Cocaine c. Prescription Pills d. Heroin e. Alcohol
- Understanding how a “functional addict/alcoholic” behaves at work a. Define the term “functional addict/alcoholic” b. Provide statistics on employed substance abusers c. Discuss how “functional addicts/alcoholics” think about work
- Identifying reasonable suspicion to send an employee for a drug test a. What are observable behaviors of substance abuse in the workplace b. How to document the observable behaviors c. Discuss what the company’s Drug and Alcohol policy states d. Discuss how the supervisor will get the employee safely transported to the drug screen
- Understanding the importance of drug testing a. Why do companies need to drug test b. What are the different types of tests available c. What are adulterants
- Identifying enabling behaviors of coworkers/supervisors a. What is professional enabling b. Why are employers afraid to confront problem behaviors
- Developing an understanding of treatment and EAP services available a. Does your company have an EAP and where do employees call to utilize b. What happens if an employee needs treatment c. What are the confidentiality standards of EAP and treatment centers?
