    “The Heroin and Prescription Pain Pill Epidemic”

    Objective:

    - Review the evolution of opioids: From opium, to heroin, to mainstream medicines

    - Briefly explain how individuals develop chemical addictions, the symptoms that accompany drug abuse, and how these symptoms drive down motivation, morale, and productivity, while increasing absenteeism, turnover, and safety incidents

    - Discuss the specific physical and behavioral signs of a heroin and/or prescription pain pill abuser in the workplace

    - Discuss current community interventions that aim to help current opioid users and prevent overdose deaths, and also reduce the spread of new opioid users

    - Discuss organizational best practices to reduce the impact that substance abuse has on the workplace, such as pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and random drug testing, policy development, employee assistance programs, and annual drug awareness trainings
