Tuesday 9/10/2019 – “Hooked: The Employer’s Role in Managing Substance Abuse & Addiction”

     Objective:

$400 million dollars… that is the price paid for substance abuse each year in the United States.  Approximately 75 percent of individuals with a substance use disorder are in the workforce, and of the 20 million individuals in the U.S. that need treatment for their condition, only 10 percent actually receive treatment.  What do these numbers mean?  Three-quarters of adults with an untreated substance use disorder are in the workforce, and they are not likely to communicate their need for help.  Despite the firm stance employer’s take against substance abuse, the addiction crisis continues to grow.  “Zero tolerance” for drug use no longer seems like a practical approach.  As one chief executive once stated, “If I randomly tested all of my employees today, I would lose half of my workforce”.

If employers can’t entirely prevent employees from misusing drugs (yes, alcohol is a drug, too), perhaps they should approach substance misuse from the lens of “risk management” instead of “zero tolerance”.  Employees are not communicating their need for help, so employers must communicate their desire to help.  It begins and ends with RECOGNITION, COMMUNICATION, and SUPPORT!  This seminar emphasizes the importance of understanding the condition of addiction, so that employers can recognize those affected and better communicate options for support.

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

    • Discuss the types and prevalence of substance use disorders in the workforce
    • Differentiate between habit, dependence, and addiction
    • Describe key areas of the brain that drive addictive behavior
    • Summarize the conditioned relationship between craving and stress relief
    • Articulate the importance of a sound drug and alcohol policy, drug testing, staff training, and an employee assistance program
